Guidelines for Consulting Children and Young People with Disabilities

Plan International (2016)

This document provides guidance on the importance of consulting children with disabilities. It provides practical suggestions for consulting with children and young people with disabilities in a variety of situations. It aims to equip individuals working on child rights with the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate with children with a variety of disabilities. The guideline sets out tips and suggestions for the entire consultation process including; planning for the consultation, general considerations for consulting with children with disabilities, specific tips for communicating with children with different types of impairments, and some case study examples.

Changing the Way We Care (2019)

This is a training package for a half-day workshop on participation and self-advocacy approaches for working with children with disabilities and their families. By the end of the training, it is intended that participants will:

  • Understand the benefits of children’s participation and family involvement;
  • Have increased knowledge and awareness of self-advocacy approaches; and
  • Have generated ideas for introducing the learnings into their programme planning.

This document contains personal information about the client, in client-friendly language, that can be used to help the client to communicate with new people; the booklet can be shown to new people the client encounters. Personal information includes: the client’s family’s structure, the parent/s’ short and long-term hopes/goals for the child, likes and dislikes, health considerations, communication strategies and capabilities.
