Plan International (2013)

This four-minute video focuses on children with disabilities from Sierra Leone and their experiences of discrimination, and steps that have helped them overcome discrimination. The video demonstrates how children with disabilities can be powerful advocates to the global community for the promotion of the rights of all children.

This two-minute video introduces three children with disabilities from the Philippines, and their unique abilities, highlighting the importance of reframing how we look at disability to see beyond the disability and to instead use a strength-based lens to focus on people with disabilities’ skills and competencies.


The Individual and Social Models of Disability

Oliver, M. (1990)

This brief paper is known to be one of the original papers on the social model of disability, written by Mike Oliver, the first Professor of Disability Studies in the world, and a key advocate of disability rights.

WHO and UNICEF (2012)

This 35-page discussion paper gives an introduction to disabilities, children with disabilities and their rights; outlines the implications of disability on early childhood development; highlights the importance of early identification, assessment and early intervention; and lists implications for policy and programming.

Mobilising Parents of Children with Disabilities in Jamaica
