How does supervision support social service workers?

About this event

This peer learning workshop is part of Social Service Workforce Week, 19–23 October 2026, themed 'Exploring the role of supervision in supporting the social service workforce'. The Global Social Service Workforce Alliance’s Guidance Manual on Strengthening Supervision (2020) defines supervision as:

“...a supportive relationship. It is carried out during regular meetings that focus on accountability, well-being, and skill development. Through regular contacts, the supervisor provides coaching and encourages the supervisee to critically reflect on their practice. The ultimate aim of supervision is to improve the service to clients.”

This is a participatory workshop

Anyone with experience in supervision, especially in implementing a supervision policy in low-resource countries, is welcome to speak, share learning, or ask questions. You are invited to join this event as a participant or as a speaker.

To register as a participant, please enrol via this event listing. At the time of the event, you will be able to join via this same page.

Come ready to participate verbally and in writing

We already have a set of speakers to open discussion, but in addition we would like as many of you as possible to share your experience of supervision, by joining the discussion using your microphone or in written comments on the Zoom whiteboard. We are particularly interested in hearing from social service workers from countries with a supervision policy or framework, in contexts where resources are limited, who can tell us about their experience of how effectively the following elements of supervision are being implemented in practice:

  1. Managing and resourcing supervision, including training supervisors, and how supervision is planned and recorded
  2. Different types of supervision and their uses, how different types can be optimally combined
  3. Use of supervision to enable reflective practice, and reflection on how the practitioner's lived experience impacts their practice
  4. Using supervision to protect workforce wellbeing, help them manage stress and workload, and reduce burnout and high turnover
