Socio-Ecological Trauma-Informed MHPSS Approach of First Step Cambodia

Deirdre Maguire

First Step Cambodia (FSC) takes a trauma-informed, socio-ecological approach to mental health and psychosocial support recognising that children's wellbeing is shaped by their families, communities, and wider social systems, not just their individual experiences.

FSC works primarily with child survivors of sexual abuse and children displaying harmful sexual behaviours, combining:

  • Therapeutic support and art/play therapy
  • Family strengthening and caregiver support
  • Community capacity building
  • Policy advocacy and partnerships with local authorities

Their holistic model is especially relevant where children and families face overlapping vulnerabilities - poverty, family separation, stigma, and emergencies.

Who should attend? Anyone already using trauma-informed approaches, or looking to integrate them into their practice - whether as an individual practitioner or as part of an organisation.
