Strengthening violence prevention using the evidence based SINOVUYO program on the USAID's Keeping Children Healthy and Safe (KCHS) Activity.
Project goal: Prevent new infections and reduce vulnerability among orphans and vulnerable children and adolescent girls and young women in southwestern and central Uganda.
Project target: Children and Adolescents living with HIV (73%), HIV exposed infants (13%), Children of female sex workers (10%), sexually abused children (2%) and virally non-suppressing caregivers (2%).
Coverage: project covers four districts of Kabale, Kanungu, Ruband and Rukiga districts in southwestern Uganda with a target reach of 14,954 beneficiaries including 7,064 reach for prevention activities using the Sinovuyo parenting program curriculum.
Intervention areas: include Case Management, Economic strengthening and systems strengthening.
Project approach:
Utilization of community structures including Para-Social Workers, Case worker, Field Agents and Social Workers who deliberately visit Households to provide a comprehensive package of services to ensure that beneficiary Households graduate from vulnerability.
The project also utilizes services of trained sinovuyo facilitators who train children and caregivers in small groups of 30 (15 caregivers and 15 children) to instill a positive culture with the aim of reducing child abuse inside and outside homes making changes that help children stay safe and in harmony with their caregivers.
Project outcomes:
11,086 beneficiaries out of 13,450 (84%) of the beneficiaries have been reached with Nutrition education and support, psychosocial support, HIV prevention and WASH messages.
Child protection and walk-in cases at the office of the probation and social welfare officers in the region have reduced from 2,647 to 206 reported in March 2023.
